The workforce on Shell’s floating Prelude vessel are safe, the company has said, but production remained on pause today after a fire late last week.

Shell flew the workers off the platform after an electrical fire, with about 150 employees reportedly removed.

But it is understood there were no safety concerns, with the oil and gas multinational removing the workers because production had been stopped following the fire.

A skeleton crew remains onboard.

“On 2 December 2021 at approximately 11.00PM AWST, smoke detected in an electrical utility area triggered the automatic fire detection and management systems on board the Prelude FLNG facility,” a spokesperson said.

“The area was made safe by the systems in place and it did not spread further.

“All workers on the facility are safe and accounted for.

“While work is underway to restore main power, production on Prelude has been suspended temporarily.”

The floating LNG production vessel cost more than $US10 billion, and was one of the first of its kind in the world.

Shell will restart gas production when main power is restored.
