Stuart Duncan has been in the stockcrate industry for almost 40 years.

As part of an ongoing series on local people in business in our community, the Forbes Advocate recently caught up with one of Forbes’ best known stock crate providers Stuart Duncan.

Here’s what we learned:

1. In your own words please describe the business/industry you are in.

The manufacturing of livestock trailers and stock crates for the livestock transporting industry and primary producers Australia wide.

2. How long have you been in business/worked in the industry?

We are currently in our 35th year of business in Forbes and I am closing in on 40 years in the industry.

3. What inspired you to open your business/join your industry?

The opportunity to work with my parents and brother to start a new business and to learn management skills from my father, to build the business to where it is today, in an industry that keeps growing.

4. Who is someone you admire and why?

My wife Kayleen, who has been by my side all the years in business, through the good times and the bad times.

5. What did you want to be when you grew up?

A motor mechanic.

6. What did you do before you started your business/in your industry?

I did my trade as a welder in general fabrication and repairs, contract work in coal mines and five years working in the stockcrate industry.

7. What advice do you have for other locals?

Love your town and support as many local businesses as you can, to keep more money in the town and create more jobs for our residents. This can also attract more people to move to our town.

8. Do you have any future plans for your business/industry?

To keep training apprentices to fill our trade qualified personnel shortage and to keep up with industry demands.

9. Who is your biggest supporter?

My family and clients.

10. Do you have any thoughts on what could help local businesses/industries?

Have a product customers want and never leave any potential customers waiting too long for call backs or quotes. Present your business well.

11. What are your hobbies, interests, sports etc?

Gardening, fishing, boating, camping and AFL football.
