St John of God Health Care is seeking approval for a $247 million extension of its Subiaco hospital through the State Development Assessment Unit before the accelerated planning pathway closes.
The organisation wants to expand St John of God Subiaco Hospital to include an eight-storey clinical facility with 260 beds, an emergency department, chapel and mother and baby centre.
The application also includes an 11-storey building for medical consulting rooms, education and research facilities, a café and a shop, as well as the expansion of the existing multi-level car park to seven storeys.
Speaking of the plans in August, St John of God Health Care Group chief executive Shane Kelly said the redevelopment would enable the hospital to provide a greater range of services as well as enhance the patient experience.
“This substantial investment will advance St John of God Subiaco Hospital’s position as a leading provider of private hospital services by creating a state-of-the-art hospital designed and equipped to meet the health needs of our community now and into the future,” Dr Kelly said.
“As Western Australia’s largest private hospital operator, St John of God Health Care is focused on responding to our patients and communities needs by identifying opportunities to add new services, and enhance our key services lines through the addition of new technology and equipment.’’
If approved, the expansion will give the hospital more than 700 beds.
In October, Georgiou Group was named the preferred contractor for the first stage of the redevelopment.
This is the last week projects can seek approval through the SDAU, which was established to fast track developments during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The unit involves the WA Planning Commission assessing the outcome of applications, rather than local government planning bodies.
State planning authorities are expected to review the process in early 2022.
