The City of Nedlands is on alert this afternoon as fire crews attempt to control a blaze in Karrakatta that is now a possible threat to lives and homes.

According to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the fire started near the intersection of Karella Street and Dalkeith Road in Karrakatta around 3pm this afternoon.

But worsening fire conditions and flying embers have prompted the department to upgrade its advice, with air support understood to be on its way.

A bushfire watch and act has now been issued for the area bounded by Smyth Road, Monash Avenue, Winthrop Avenue and Aberdare Road, almost half of which is taken up by the hospital precinct.

In an alert published this afternoon, DFES said there was a possible threat to lives and homes as the fire was approaching in the area and conditions were changing.

Residents are being urged to leave now if the way is clear, keep doors and windows closed and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.
