Former Perth Glory captain Jamie Harnwell has been appointed chief executive of the sport’s governing body in Western Australia.
He succeeds James Curtis, who was Football West’s chief executive for almost six years.
Mr Harnwell has been with the West Perth-based organisation for about 12 years, including as chief football officer and head of development.
He played 256 games for A-League team Perth Glory between 1998 and 2011, captaining the men’s side for three seasons.
After retiring from professional football, Mr Harnwell went on to coach the women’s A-League team between 2011 and 2015.
He has also been a Fox Sports commentator for almost a decade.
“It is exciting to become CEO of Football West and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” Mr Harnwell said of his appointment.
“We are the biggest team sport in the country in terms of participation and we are in a fantastic position. But there is still plenty of potential for further growth, especially here in WA.
“It has been terrific to work with James Curtis and gain invaluable experience, now I am ready to put my own stamp on the position.”
Mr Harnwell will continue to work alongside Mr Curtis until the latter’s departure on March 31.
Football West chairman Sherif Andrawes said the organisation had considered several candidates for the role as part of its nationwide search.
He said Mr Harnwell was well placed as leader, having worked closely with the organisation’s outgoing chief executive for a number of years.
“He [Mr Harnwell] has transferred the drive and dedication needed to succeed on the pitch to his roles at Football West,” Mr Andrawes said.
“In addition, Jamie also possesses the necessary skills and vision to drive Football West forward as we continue to grow the sport in WA and we move towards the opening of the State Football Centre and the 2023 Women’s World Cup and beyond.”
The $32.5 million State Football Centre is set to open in time for the Women’s World Cup.
It’s intended as the home of soccer in WA and will become the new headquarters for Football West.
