Perth developer Hesperia is in talks with the Western Australian Trotting Association to transform Gloucester Park into a residential apartment district.

The Adrian Fini and Ben Lisle-led developer is proposing a plan to revitalise the heritage-listed area into a residential district, with reported plans for multi-storey apartments to surround the racetrack.

The association, trading as Gloucester Park Harness Racing, confirmed it was examining plans from Hesperia for the potential rejuvenation of its site.

“As the home of one of Perth’s major and most popular sporting activities since harness racing commenced at the site in 1929, Gloucester Park contains a range of iconic heritage buildings, particularly the landmark tote building and entrance gates,” GPHR chief executive Michael Radley said in a statement.

“Preservation and repurposing of these buildings for the long-term is an essential part of the work being undertaken with Hesperia.”

Mr Radley added that the process would include extensive consultation with Gloucester Park’s members as to how the club could improve racing and entertainment facilities for the long term as well as contribute to East Perth’s revitalisation.

“Redevelopment of the site could be funded by residential and other development on areas of the site that would also play a significant role in the transformation of the east end of the CBD,” Mr Radley added.
