Capricornia Chamber of Commerce President Phil Henry says Census figures showing more business exits than entries for both Rockhampton and Livingstone council areas are no cause for concern.

There were 579 business entries and 596 exits for the Rockhampton Regional Council area and 319 entries for Livingstone Shire Council and 327 exits, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

However, Mr Henry said it was influenced by many factors and did not mean businesses were necessarily failing.

He said many were sole traders with no employees or businesses with one to four employees.

Mr Henry said nationwide about 60 per cent of businesses fail in their first three years, particularly without the assets to carry them through difficult times, such as assets.

He also stressed that some people were not businesses or could simply choose to no longer continue the business, even if they were profitable.

Mr Henry said future figures would offer a better insight into how Covid had impacted businesses.

He encouraged potential business owners to create a business plan and join a Chamber of Commerce.
