Property magnate Adrian Fini has welcomed Premier Mark McGowan’s delay on reopening the border, saying health should be the number one concern.
Speaking at today’s Business News Destination State lunch, the Hesperia director and industry veteran said he was “very happy with the delay that half our society is not happy with”.
He added that Western Australia had weathered the COVID-19 storm better than most states, though there were still challenges ahead.
“It is still going to be a challenge, but when I speak to my colleagues on the east coast I think they have suffered substantially more than WA,” he said.
Mr Fini also told the event that COVID-19 had created opportunities in WA for local tourists to appreciate the state’s natural assets.
His comments come as 19 new community cases of COVID-19 were announced in WA, which took the state’s total active cases to 192.
The University of Western Australia today became the first university in the state to restrict access for the unvaccinated.
Mark McGowan last month backed down from his plan to re-open the state’s border and is yet to set a revised date.
Australian Medical Association president Dr Omar Khorshid criticised the Premier’s decision as unnecessary, describing it as failure of the WA government to prepare.
