Fiveight to build $35m Freo hotel

Fiveight has submitted plans to build a $35 million six-storey hotel at the site of the former Spicers Building in Fremantle, after close to four years of holding the asset.  

The Tattarang property division has mooted plans to build a 117-room hotel at the corner of William and Henderson Street with the City of Fremantle.

Its proposal includes retail spaces, a rooftop terrace with a swimming pool and one level of basement parking for up to 48 vehicles.

Tattarang chief executive Andrew Hagger said the project would transform the site into a hotel designed to sit comfortably alongside Fremantle’s historic architecture and existing public spaces.

“We have worked closely with the architects to create a lifestyle hotel concept that draws on Fremantle’s unique character and attitude to create a landmark building that brings people together,” he said.

“We plan to deliver a project that is worthy of the site’s strategic position and significance, giving Fremantle’s tourist precinct a lively heart and helping boost the revitalisation of the port city.”

Head of Fiveight John Meredith said the hotel, which will be built in a U-shape, will include a mix of room types, including six rooms designed for accessible use and more than 75 per cent would have balconies.

“We have focused on ensuring that the building’s height and scale considers the existing urban fabric and enhances existing linkages around the site and into the building itself,” he said.

“Ultimately, we will create a premium hotel with mixed-use facilities that can be enjoyed by tourists, business visitors and locals alike.”

Fiveight bought the 2,834 square metre site in 2018 from Sirona Urban, which had plans for the site dating back to 2013.

Sirona Urban developed the adjacent Walyalup Koort, formerly Kings Square, including the $270 million FOMO precinct.

The site formerly housed the Spicers stationery company building, which was demolished in the 1970s.

Construction is due to be complete in 2025.
